This dashboard provides estimates of potential student cost savings using course enrollment data provided by the Libraries Course Materials tool in Canvas, with a formula based on an approach recommended by the Open Education Network (OEN): [Enrollment] x [$75] = [Cost Savings]. While the OEN and UNL’s STAR initiative use $100 as the average cost of a textbook, the UNL Libraries has decided to use a potential cost savings of $75. This figure is based on our calculated average cost of a Libraries Course Materials item, an OpenStax recommendation, and examples from other universities, including Oregon State University and the University of Minnesota Libraries. This dashboard is only as accurate as the underlying data and does not account for the use of libraries’ materials in courses outside the use of the Libraries Course Materials tool in Canvas.
