Reading Room Guidelines
The guidelines below are designed to preserve our collections and ensure that your visit runs smoothly, so that you can focus on the research. 

  • Please provide photo identification.
  • Food or drink are not allowed in the reading room.
  • Leave bags and coats on the coat rack near the door or in the lockers outside the reading room.
  • You may use your laptop and phone for research purposes and for taking non-flash photographs.
  • To connect to the guest wi-fi, please see the NU-Guest Guidelines.
  • Take phone calls outside of the reading room.
  • Use only pencils. If you do not have a pencil, we will provide one.
  • To help preserve materials, we will assign seating.
  • Use one folder from a box at a time and do not move items within each folder and box.
  • Be careful not to let laptops, notebooks, or other objects rest on top of books, manuscripts, or archival materials.
  • Do not attach items to or mark the materials. We provide paper slips to flag a page in a book or a document in a folder. We will provide you with paper slips to mark items you would like to have scanned.
  • We provide gloves for handling photographs and other items as necessary.
  • Archive staff reserve the right to examine the researcher's bags, notebooks, or any other personal property before they leave the reading room.
  • Visitors to Archives & Special Collections also agree to adhere to the UNL Libraries Standards of Conduct

Copyright and Conditions Governing Use

The researcher assumes full responsibility for conforming with the laws of copyright. Archives & Special Collections will provide information about copyright owners and related information when it is available. Securing permission to publish or use material is the responsibility of the researcher, and the researcher agrees to indemnify and hold harmless the University of Nebraska, its officers and employees, from any action involving the infringement of the rights of any person or heirs and descendants in common law or under statutory copyright. Note that unless specifically transferred to the Board of Regents of the University of Nebraska and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, any applicable copyrights may be held by another individual or entity. Conditions Governing Access

Collections in Archives & Special Collections may contain materials with sensitive or confidential information that is protected under federal or state right to privacy laws and regulations, the Nebraska Public Records Statutes (Neb. Rev. Stat. §§ 84-712 through 84-712.09), and other relevant regulations. Confidential material may include, but is not limited to, educational, medical, financial and personnel records. While Archives & Special Collections employees exercise due diligence in screening and restricting materials protected by law, it is possible that some items may evade detection. Researchers are advised that the disclosure of certain information pertaining to identifiable living individuals represented in our collections without the consent of those individuals may have legal ramifications for which the Board of Regents of the University of Nebraska and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln assumes no responsibility.
